Meet Mr. Parker

MIDDLE SCHOOL ART

During art classes students will engage in a various art projects employing a variety of art materials.  Lessons are aligned with the national and state visual art content standards, emphasizing the understanding of the elements and principals of design.  Many lessons incorporate cross-curriculum connections, technology, and art historical foundations that discuss artists, time periods and cultural significance.  Students will be encouraged to discuss art critically and value its place in society.

6TH GRADE:

Grade six art curriculum is based largely on reinforcing the foundations students have developed through their elementary art experiences. Each standard is designed to build upon their understanding of the elements and principles of art and design. Main focuses in sixth grade are refining observational drawing skills, portraiture, and introducing concepts that help artists create the illusion of depth in two-dimensional works of art.

7TH GRADE:

In seventh grade art students will utilize the fundamental concepts they were introduced to in their sixth grade year and build upon them by employing those skills to respond to various creative challenges. During this year students will continue to learn additional technical art skills and have the freedom to make choices that will allow them to further hone in on the skills and media they find themselves gravitating toward.

8TH GRADE:

In eight grade students have many course choices, among them are 2-D and 3-D art. While the respective classes have definite focuses on either 2-D or 3-D skills, students will still carryout projects requiring technical proficiency in facets of both. In either class projects revolve around the same art academic content standards, students simply demonstrate their understanding of these concepts in vastly different project based responses. While 6th and 7th grade art is designed to provide students with skills and allow them to find their creative voice as artists, both 8th grade art classes are comprised of predominately project based learning scenarios that allow students to employ the skills they have developed throughout their art education. For example, students will become architects as they plan, design and build their own 3-D model dream house and become graphic designers, entrepreneurs and marketers as they devise a product or invention as well as the packaging for their idea. While 2-D art focuses on but is not limited to more "traditional" fine arts practices such as drawing and painting, 3-D art requires some of the same fine arts skills but introduces 3-D design concepts along side them.
