Shapes of Supplies: Paper Colalge

Any great artist trains his or her eye to break complex objects down to their most basic parts. In this project students will practice by drawing objects they see around the art room using only basic shapes. This helps students learn to look at objects differently. Mandalas

Mandalas

In this activity students learn a brief history of the mandala along with their significance within the tibetan culture. Each student creates one eight of a mandala design then replicates it concentrically to create the full circular arrangement. Along with the cultural significance students learn about shapes, colors, symmetry and pattern as well as the importance of patience and craftsmanship when creating an original art piece.

Painted Feathers: Global Angel Wings

This lesson teaches student about practicing L.A. painter, Colette Miller and her world renowned street art project entitled, Global Angel Wings. Through participating in this lesson students will learn various painting techniques like gradient washes as well as sharpen their observational drawing skills. Each student will create colorful, cut-out feathers that will be used as part of a large scale, collaborative art piece that will evoke curiosity and beg its viewers to interact.

Color Value Mannequins

This project requires planned use of many of the elements & principles of art including, shape, color, line, value, form, & space. Students will be introduced to many new techniques & media as they create a collection of sketch mannequin drawings in a variety of poses, adding color using chalk pastels. Students examine the color wheel to select colors that easily blend from light to dark helping to establish the illusion of depth, all while paying close attention to light source.

In this project students get an opportunity to explore the element of form by creating three-dimensional letters from tagboard. Prior to building their letters students must first create a plan for their design as well as learn to draw them in one point perspective to show their depth.

Narrative Self Portrait

In this in depth lesson students employ the majority of the elements and principles they  have learned throughput the term simultaneously to create a narrative self-portrait. Students learn how art is not only visual but it is often a form of communication that tells a story through its imagery.  ​ Students first learn how to draw each facial feature separately, then learn rules of placement and proportion to insure their portrait looks as accurate and as real as possible.

In this quick painting exercise students learn some traditional as well as alternative techniques to apply paint to their paper to create pictures of Japanese cherry blossom trees.

In this project students look at the work of various graffiti artists then design a graffiti style "tag" using media of their choice.

In this project students create an artist's journal filling each page with different painting and other techniques. This assignment allows students to experiment with a variety of media and explore their different effects.

In this cross-curriculum project students work collaboratively to design and create their own board games based upon common literary themes they are familiar with from their English classes.

Mixed Media Choice

Mixed Media Choice

In this project students are given the freedom to choose both the subject matter as well as the media they use to create a mixed media work of art. Students are required to complete a "Media Mix" test sheet to learn how certain art media reacts with others prior to making their final choices for their project.

Set Design & Props

Set Design & Props

This project is completed only during term 3 art classes in order to provide the set designs and props for the annual school musical. Students choose what assignment they will complete from a list of needed backdrops and props depending on the year's story.

Independent Art Study

Each student will identify and design an art lesson that meets at least one of the Ohio Department of Education Visual Arts Standards. The lesson they create will be an independent study, completed during class time if projects are finished early or outside of class.

In this project students are faced with the creative challenge to illustrate a word of their choice in a way that helps to define its meaning. Students learn of a variety of concepts they can choose to employ to help them complete their task.

Two Point Perspective Cities

The ability to draw in perspective is a crucial building block that every artist needs to master. Understanding the rules of perspective allows artists to draw things that appear to be three-dimensional on a flat surface and is the foundation to creating any drawing that has a realistic feel within its context and space. The subject matter of architecture is commonly used to introduce this idea because they can easily be rendered from basic geometric forms such as cubes and rectangular prisms.

This lesson requires student to look closely at the eyes of a chosen animal and draw a macro view of a detailed eye or eyes.

In this lesson students learn about the architecture of the Renaissance ie domes, pediments, arches, columns, and capitals prior to creating their own renaissance style building out of clay. Through this process students will learn many basic clay making techniques including, pinch, coil, and slab making.

Nevelson style "Assemblages"

Nevelson style "Assemblages"

In this lesson students study selected works of Louise Nevelson, Russian American assemblage artists. Her large scale, three-dimensional, found object sculptures are typically painted monochromatically to unify the diverse collection of materials she utilizes to create her work. Students work together to create small vignettes that resemble Nevelson's work from found objects then paint them and put them all together to create one large scale display.

Themed salt & pepper shakers

In this project students work to create a functional, themed clay piece by designing and building their own salt & pepper shaker set. Students must plan how they will create their objects to resemble the subject matter they choose and still be hollow so that they will effectively hold and distribute salt & pepper.

In this lesson students become osteologists as they study the skeletal systems and bones of mammals to create value drawings. This lesson builds upon foundations in light source and shading from previous art lessons.

Deconstructed Books

In this project students desonstruct and reconstruct donated/outdated reference and textbooks to create a three dimensional artwork. Students research existing deconstructed book works of art for inspiration and learn a variety of paper sculpting techniques prior to constructing their piece.

In this project students become inventors and graphic designers as they design and create a prototype of an invention as well as the packaging for their product. Students look at color various aspects of a product's identity such as color schemes, fonts/typefaces, logos, and slogns.

STEAM: Automotive Design Car Topper

In this project students become automotive designers as they work in conjunction with our STEM class to design a car or truck frame that will function with its chassis. As the students design they consider both aesthetics and function.

3D InsInstallation Art

3D InsInstallation Art

For this project students look at examples of 3D street art prior to finding an area inside the school to create art around. In other words each art piece is site specific, designed around a preexisting space or object within the school building. Students create plan sketches, create their design then install it at or on their chosen site.

Foam-core Architectural Models

In this project students become architects, interior designers, and landscape architects as they create a floor plan for a foam-core architectural model of their dream house, room, or business.
